Author Visit

Award-wining author, Tom Palmer, visited our school on Wednesday 19 April. He spoke to our Year 7 and 9 pupils about the historical fiction novels he has written and the novels and books that inspired him growing up. He shared with pupils his creative process to ensure his stories are well-informed: researching the facts, exploring artifacts in museums, reading related literature or autobiographies and interviewing relevant people who have experienced historical events. Tom interviewed holocaust survivors who were sent to concentration camps in the Lake District to inform his ‘After the War’ book. He told pupils of his struggles to be descriptive when writing and how he overcomes this problem by creating scrapbooks with visual cues such as photographs and maps when developing his stories. Tom’s books are an excellent choice for pupils wanting to enrich their historical knowledge.

Pupils had the opportunity to purchase his books at a discounted price and these orders will be dispatched to pupils next week. We are aware that some additional pupils wanted to purchase Tom’s books after hearing about his stories, so the deadline to order his books has been extended until Friday 28 April. The letter sent home with Year 7 and 9 pupils lists the six titles available to purchase.  Please indicate which title you would like and return the slip by Friday 28 April. Payments should be made via ParentPay.
